USAT Announces 2009 Hall of Fame Inductees

Five individuals who have impacted the sport of triathlon will be inducted into USA Triathlon's Hall of Fame on Feb. 13, 2010. The 2009 inductees are the second class to be inducted into the USAT Hall of Fame since its creation in 2008, and include some of the most notable figures in multisport history.

Warmer Temperatures for Chilly Cheeks Duathlon #1

A welcome warmup in temperature greeted the 310 hearty folks who jumped into the first of three Chilly Cheeks Winter Duathlon races put on by Racing Underground. KT Desantis, 47, of Allenspark won the women’s open division in 1:06:59. On the men’s side, Andy Palmer, 37, of Highlands Ranch won the open duathlon in 56:27.

2010 Colorado Race Calendar Now Available

With 2010 right around the corner, start planning your season with Colorado Triathlete’s race calendar.  Back in 2010 are the Thursday evening Stroke & Strides at the Boulder Reservoir, along with a smorgasbord of popular multisport events hosted by Racing Underground.  If summer seems a long way off, remember there’s plenty of winter action to get involved in.  Beginning in January, the Beaver Creek Snowshoe Adventure Series will host the first of its three events, which culminate with the Jeremy Wright North American Snowshoe Championships on March 7.  But before 2009 slips away, there’s still time to launch into winter racing with the first race of the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series on December 12 at Cherry Creek State Park.

Ironman 70.3 Worlds

Colorado's contingent at this year's Ironman 70.3 World Championships was led by first year pro Brooke Davison and Bryan Rhodes, both of Boulder. Davison finished seventh in the women's pro race, and Rhodes placed eleventh for the men.

Hola Top Amateur at Ironman Florida

Colorado's Tim Hola claimed honors as the top amateur at Ironman Florida. His time of 8 hours 47 minutes 23 seconds also propelled him into a tenth place overall finish.

Alexander, Wellington Continue Their Reign in Kona

Wellington Breaks Newby-Fraser’s Course Record

Australia's Craig Alexander and Great Britain's Chrissie Wellington defended their titles today at the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Alexander added a second consecutive World Championship title to his resume, while Wellington added a third. Wellington's overall time of 8:54:02 broke the course record set in 1992 by Ironman icon, Paula Newby-Fraser.

Crescent Moon Triathlon Brings Summer to a Close

Over 500 athletes celebrated the end of summer by competing in the Crescent Moon Sprint Triathlon. Under beautiful Indian summer skies and perfect temps, Dan Mackenzie won the men’s elite division in a time of 56 minutes 2 seconds.

Hola Wins Long Course National Title

Tim Hola, 35, of Highlands Ranch broke the four hour barrier to win the Halfmax National Long Course Championship.  Willy Pickhardt, 20, of Arkansas and Robert Vernon, 30, of Kansas finished second and third, respectively.  Rochelle Hair, 35, of California won the women’s race with Lisa Ribes, 31, of Arizona and Amy Larson, 39, of California rounding out the podium.

Top Field Produces Record Times at 5430 Long Course Triathlon

Set to become an Ironman 70.3 on next year's race schedule, this year's 5430 Long Course Triathlon featured some of the best talent in the sport. Boulder pros Timothy O'Donnell and Julie Dibens claimed top honors along with new course records. O'Donnell finished in 3:45:51, ahead of Tyler Butterfield (3:51:44) and Leon Griffin (3:53:15). Dibens posted a time of 4:10:58, holding off two-time Ironman champ Chrissie Wellington (4:12:18) and first-year pro Brooke Davison (4:24:00).

Junior Elite and Youth Elite Championships

A record number of youth elite and junior elite triathletes raced for national titles amid ideal weather conditions at the USA Triathlon National Junior Olympic Festival in Colorado Springs. The day started with the Junior Elite National Championships where Tanelle Berard of Clive, Iowa, earned the win over pre-race favorite Jessica Broderick, a student at the University of Colorado in Boulder who hails from Middlebury, Conn.

Wealing, Vanlandingham Win XTERRA Mexico Championships

Seth Wealing and Shonny Vanlandingham took home top honors at the XTERRA Mexico Championship in Valle de Bravo on Sunday. Wealing, who described the venue as "one of the coolest places ever - altitude, cool temps, amazing landscape," finished nearly two minutes ahead of 2005 XTERRA World Champion Nicolas Lebrun while Vanlandingham edged 2006 Winter Olympian Rebecca Dussault by just 24 seconds. It marks the third win in four races for Vanlandingham (who also won the South Central and Mountain Cup titles) and the first championship victory for Wealing since capturing the XTERRA Mountain title in 2007.

XTERRA Indian Peaks

About four hundred athletes vied for $2,500 in cash prizes in the second annual XTERRA Indian Peaks.  The top three in the women’s race were Jennifer Smith of Gunnison, Sarah Tarkington of Boulder, and Tracy Thelen of Colorado Springs.  For the men, Branden Rakita of Manitou Springs, Cody Waite of Lakewood, and Jason Michalak of Lakewood took the top honors.

Ironman USA Lake Placid

Twenty Colorado athletes competed at this year's instantiation of Ironman USA in Lake Placid. The Boulder trio of Billy Edwards (9:12:09, 7th), Brad Seng (9:15:27, 8th) and Curt Chesney (9:18:58, 9th) finished within seven minutes of each other to claim top ten finishes.

Beaver Creek XTERRA Mountain Cup

Lebrun, Vanlandingham Claim Titles

Nico Lebrun and Shonny Vanlandingham won the XTERRA Mountain Cup off-road triathlon at Beaver Creek Resort in Avon.  The course, designed by legendary adventure racer Mike Kloser, featured more than 4,000-feet of climbing and combined a 1-mile swim in Avon's Nottingham Lake with a 16-mile mountain bike and 6-mile trail run.

Michael Lovato and Michellie Jones claimed victories at the Rhode Island Ironman 70.3. Lovato, a two-time Ironman champion, claimed the title with an overall time of 3:54:39.

O'Donnell, Ellis Win Boulder Peak

Hallberg, Popelar Top Amateurs

Boulder's Timothy O'Donnell (1:54:32) and Thornton's Mary Beth Ellis (2:07:31) overcame a competitive field to claim the men and women's pro titles at this year's Boulder Peak Triathlon. Longmont's Jim Hallberg (2:05:24) and Parker's Steph Popelar (2:21:42) did the same in the amateur competition. Popelar had to play catch up during the bike and run legs to overcome 5430 Sprint Triathlon champion Teri Cady (2:22:18), while Hallberg used the same strategy to run down perennially strong Tim Hola (2:05:45).

The foursome of Sarah Haskins, Jarrod Shoemaker, Laura Bennett and Matt Reed took fourth at the inaugural ITU 4x Mixed Team World Championships in Des Moines one day after the Hy-Vee Elite Cup Triathlon.

Hy-Vee ITU Elite Cup Triathlon

Canadian Simon Whitfield and Australian Emma Moffit each took away $200,000 for their wins at this year's Hy-Vee Triathlon, the biggest first-place prize purse on the world triathlon circuit. Whitfield edged out Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia and Jan Frodeno of Germany by a mere second to claim the prize. In her race, Moffit dominated with a cushion of a minute and a half over runner-up Emma Snowsill of Australia. Boulder's Matt Reed finished 20th in 1:51:58, and Boulder's Laura Bennett—who won the title in 2007—placed 14th in 2:04:35.

Simon Thompson (1:08:56) beat out Mark Van Akkeren (1:10:08) for top honors at this year's 5430 Sprint Triathlon. Marek Dvorak (1:10:59) rounded out third in the men's race. For the women, Teri Cady claimed the win in 1:18:07. Steph Popelar (1:19:53) and Amanda Durner (1:19:57) took second and third, respectively.

Andy Potts and Sarah Haskins led the charge for the host United States at Sunday's Dextro Energy ITU World Championship Series races in Washington, DC. Potts and Haskins each finished fourth in their respective races at the only U.S. stop in the inaugural eight-race series. It was the third stop on the tour, which will culminate in Gold Coast, Australia in September.

Rydholm, Daerr Claim Rocky Mountain Regional Olympic Distance Titles

Boulder's Amber Rydholm and Justin Daerr claimed titles at the Rocky Mountain Regional Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships, held at the Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon. For the first time in 2009 a pair of Americans took the top honors at an XTERRA Cup Championship race as Josiah Middaugh from Vail, Colorado and Shonny Vanlandingham from Durango, Colorado won the men's and women's pro titles on a sweltering hot day at the XTERRA South Central Cup in the Heart of Arkansas.

Andy Potts Victorious at St. Anthony's

- In a triathlon that only saw the pro fields contest the swim due to poor water conditions, Andy Potts of Colorado Springs asserted his readiness to race. Potts won the contest in 1:46:33, ahead of runner-up Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand (1:48:02), and third place finisher Stuart Hayes of the UK (1:48:45). In the women’s pro race, Sarah Groff of Colorado Springs (2:00:21) finished second behind winner Rebeccah Wassner of New York (2:00:04). Sara McLarty finished third in 2:00:27.

USA Triathlon has announced the recipients of its annual Elite Athlete of the Year awards for 2008 as selected by the USAT Athlete Advisory Council and sponsored by Garmin International. Highlighting the list are Olympic/ITU Triathletes of the Year Matt Reed and Laura Bennett of Boulder. Andy Potts of Colorado Springs made the the list as Elite Non-ITU Athlete of the Year; and Jasmine Oeinck of Littleton was named Elite U23 Athlete of the Year.

Brian Smith, a 33-year-old elite endurance racer from Gunnison, Colorado, was as flawless as the weather at Snowbasin Resort today – putting together the best bike, snowshoe, run and randonnée ski times to capture the XTERRA Winter World Championship for the second straight year in two hours, 21 seconds, more than five minutes ahead of two-time Winter Triathlon World Champion Nicolas Lebrun from France.

Rebecca Dussault of Gunnison earned an individual bronze and guided the United States to a team silver at the ITU Elite Winter Triathlon World Championships in Gaishorn, Austria, February 14-15. They were the first medals ever for the U.S. at the Winter Triathlon World Championships.

Macy, Isom Victorious at Mount Taylor Winter Quadrathlon

Travis Macy of Golden and Lisa Isom of Vail celebrated Valentine's Day with wins at this year's 42-mile race to the top (and back) of the highest peak in northwest New Mexico. Macy led the men with his time of 2:14:31. Eli Torgeson of Albuquerque claimed the runner-up spot in 2:20:36, and James Kovacs of Denver placed third in 2:32:07. In the women's race, Isom posted a time of 2:31:11. Boulder's Amber Rydholm took second in 2:42:15, and Mary Gonzales of Grand Junction rounded out the top three with her time of 2:52:04.

Kloser, Isom Best Field at Tennessee Pass Winter Triathlon

At the second annual Aria Spa & Club Winter Triathlon held at Tennessee Pass Nordic Center, Mike Kloser of Vail engaged in a hard fought battle with Travis Macy of Golden.  Kloser, with no signs of slowing down at age 49, used his mountain biking and skate skiing skills to overcome the 25-year old Macy’s lead off the snowshoe.  Kloser claimed victory in 1:24:24.  Less than a minute later, Macy arrived to claim second in a time of 1:25:18. The women were led by Lisa Isom of nearby Vail, who placed sixth overall in a time of 1:33:56.  Sari Anderson of Glenwood Springs came in less than three minutes later to claim the women’s runner-up spot and seventh place overall in 1:36:43.

Three Colorado Athletes Named to USAT Trade Team

A select group of elite triathletes will be representing USA Triathlon and its partners as members of the USAT Trade Team in 2009. Highlighting the team is 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Susan Williams of Littleton. Also on the team are Justin Hurd of Fort Collins and Joe Umphenour of Colorado Springs.

Gunnison’s Brian Smith and Rebecca Dussault Crowned Winter Triathlon National Champions

More than 50 athletes competed Sunday in the 2009 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships under sunny skies at Mount Bachelor. Brian Smith from Gunnison won the run, bike, cross country ski event with a time of 59 minutes, 3 seconds. The elite women's race was decided very early with Nordic ski racer and Olympian Rebecca Dussault of Gunnison taking an early lead on the run and finishing with a time of 1:05:39.
