Timothy O'Donnell placed third to lead five Americans to top-10 finishes at the Ironman World Championship 70.3 on Saturday. O'Donnell (Boulder, Colo.) stood tenth after the swim but came on strong on the bike and run to finish as the top U.S. athlete with a time of 3 hours, 44 minutes, 18 seconds over the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run event.

Cody Waite and Tracy Thelen Win XTERRA Lory

Cody Waite rode the final nine miles of the rugged XTERRA Lory Triathlon minus the bicycle seat that had fallen off when he negotiated a tight turn. And Tracy Thelen was still feeling the effects of a 24-hour race she and her husband had won just a week earlier in Gunnison. Despite the difficult odds, both pros held on to win overall elite titles in the second annual event that featured a half-mile swim in Horsetooth Reservoir, 12-mile single-track bike ride and 4.8-mile run.

Subaru Ironman Canada

Viktor Zyemtsev (8:32:28) and Meredith Kessler (9:13:46) claimed victories at this year’s Ironman Canada while a host of Colorado athletes made their presence known.  Boulder pros Christie Sym (9:41:30) and Uli Bromme (9:46:19) finished fifth and seventh in the women’s race. Boulder’s Dennis Meeker posted a time of 9:21:40 to finish fourth in the men’s 35-39 age group and twenty-sixth overall.  University of Colorado triathlon team standouts, Todd Darlington and Ashley Walker both posted top ten finishes in their age group.  Darlington, a swim specialist, exited the water in 48 minutes 54 seconds and went on to finish eighth in the men’s 25-29 age group in 10:05:53.  Walker placed fifth in the women’s 25-29 age group in 10:35:18.

Olympian Andy Potts of Colorado Springs captured Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Boulder Triathlon in 3 hours, 46 minutes, 50 seconds. Great Britain’s Julie Dibens celebrated victory in the pro women’s race. Dibens, the current Ironman 70.3 World Champion, crossed the line in 4:19:46. In age-group competition, Boulder triathlete and mother of two, Brandy Rothman, held off her closest competitors in a tight race. Brian Schaning of Colorado Springs claimed the top spot among age-group men with his time of 4:05:16.

Hoffman Victorious in Lake Placid

First Ironman Win for Durango Pro

Durango’s Ben Hoffman claimed the top spot in the men’s race at this year’s Ironman Lake Placid with a time of 8:39:34.  Hoffman bested Petr Vabrousek (second, 8:46:33) and Maik Twelsiek (third in 8:48:33) for the win.  Boulder pros Justin Daerr and Brad Seng finished fourth (9:05:09) and sixth (9:15:19), respectively.  Jesse Vondracek of Durango also claimed a top ten finish (ninth, 9:18:10).  Colorado women were led by Kerrie Wlad’s first place finish (10:34:33) in the 35-39 age group, qualifying her for Kona.

Sixty-eight women took to the Serpentine Lake in world famous Hyde Park to kick off the race under clear skies with an air temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. American Laura Bennett and Aussie Emma Moffatt charged to the front from the start, just as they did last weekend in Hamburg. Bennett’s teammate, Sarah Haskins, joined the lead pair as the top women dove in to start lap two, with the rest of the group getting strung out behind.

Defending champion Timothy O’Donnell claimed victory once again at the Boulder Peak Triathlon with a time of 1 hour 54 minutes.  Tim Reed and Matt Reed rounded out the top three for the men.  On the women’s side, Joanna Zeiger outgunned a host of younger triathletes to take the women’s title in a time of 2:10:03.  Angela Naeth and Lisa Marangon finished second and third, respectively.  In age-group competition, Kelly Lear-Kaul finished first in the women’s race while Brian Schaning won the men’s.

Potts Claims First Ironman Title in Coeur d'Alene

Pro triathlete Andy Potts of Colorado Springs claimed his first Ironman title in Coeur d’Alene this weekend.  With the win, the former short course specialist definitively proved his ability in long course racing—not that it was ever in doubt after posting top ten finishes at the Ironman World Championship over the previous two years.  Potts dominated the race—starting with his 46:28 swim, continuing with his 4:42:04 bike, and finishing with his 2:52:48 marathon run.   His total time of 8:24:40 was just over a minute shy of the course record set by Victor Zyemtsev in 2005.  Courtney Ogden finished second with a time of 8:38:17 while Boulder’s Michael Lovato—the 2003 Ironman Coeur d’Alene champion—took third in 8:41:17.  Boulder pros Chris McDonald and Billy Edwards finished fifth and twelfth, respectively.

Over 700 athletes competed this weekend in the Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon, which hosted the 2010 USAT Rocky Mountain Regional Championship.  In the women’s race, Boulder pro Uli Bromme, 29, claimed victory in the Olympic distance race with a time of 2:25:25.

Defending champion Teri Cady, 34, of Louisville won the women’s race 1 hour 16 minutes 51 seconds to put her in the lead for the series title after the first of three races. In the men’s competition, pro triathlete Jordan Jones, 29, from Golden claimed victory in 1:08:06. Although Jones set himself up well with a 10:06 swim split, it took foot speed to seal the win.

Wane, Broderick Each Claim Second in Individual Results

The University of Colorado brought home the overall team crown at USA Triathlon’s Collegiate National Championship to claim its first overall title since winning three straight in 2003, 2004, and 2005. The team was led by Cedric Wane and Jessica Broderick. Wane finished second in the men’s race behind Cal Poly’s Chris Stehula while Broderick took the runner-up spot to Virginia’s Nicole Kelleher in the women’s race.

But nothing seems more impressive than the soon-to-be-octogenarian's list of accomplishments. The former computer science professor has run a marathon in all 50 states, bicycled across the country four times, and on March 14 attained yet another goal—completing 100 races between ages 70 and 80, including more than a dozen triathlons.

With the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship set for Saturday, April 17, the nation's top college triathletes are just one month away from returning to Lubbock, Texas, for a shot at a national title. The perennially strong University of Colorado triathlon team will be sending a strong contingent, including the reigning women’s champion, Jessica Broderick. The Buffaloes took third last year in the combined team results.

Colorado Springs Women Sweep Miami International Triathlon

Colorado Springs national team athletes Sarah Haskins, Jillian Petersen, and Sarah McClarty swept the top three spots at the early-season Miami International Triathlon today, with Mary Beth Ellis of Thornton close behind in fourth. Haskins picked up the $5,000 first place purse with a time of 1:58:16 in the Olympic distance non-drafting race. In the men's race, national team member and Colorado Springs resident Matt Chrabot also kicked off his 2010 season in impressive fashion. Chris Lieto took second, and Matt Reed of Boulder placed third.

Building Intensive Endurance during Base Training

Mention base training and the mantra “long slow distance” (LSD) often comes to mind. When this is translated into long duration aerobic workouts primarily performed in Zone 2, this type of training certainly forms the backbone to any endurance athlete’s aerobic development. However, while swimming, biking and running in Zone 2 forms a necessary component of base training, it is not fully sufficient by itself and needs to be complemented with more intensive endurance training as the base phase progresses.

Fleischmann, Haskins Take USAT Elite Development Race Titles

USA Triathlon Elite Development Race #1

In what proved to be a competitive early-season contest, Brian Fleischmann and Sarah Haskins were victorious in USA Triathlon's first Elite Development Race of 2010 at Lake Louisa State Park. Fleishmann outdistanced a field of 35 men with a time of 53:22 in the sprint distance race, which consisted of a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike and a 5-kilometer run. Fellow ITU-ranked elites Cameron Dye (53:48) and Jarrod Shoemaker (54:14) took second and third, respectively.

Middaugh, Isom Take Winter Triathlon at Tennessee Pass

In a close men’s race, Josiah Middaugh claimed victory at the Aria Spa & Club Winter Triathlon held at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center.  Middaugh finished with a time of 1:33:16, followed by Jay Henry in 1:33:45, and Mike Kloser in 1:34:35.  Lisa Isom cruised to victory in the women’s race with a time of 1:48:06.  Gretchen Reeves took second in 2:08:35, followed by Kate Chapman in third place with a time of 2:24:59.
