Colorado Athletes Post Strong Finishes

Craig Alexander regained his Ironman World Championship title with a record-setting performance.  The Boulder who races for Australia posted a course-record time of 8 hours 3 minutes 56 seconds.  The time surpassed the previous course-record of 8:04:08, set by Luc Van Lierde in 1996.  The women’s race also saw a familiar face on the top step of the podium as Boulder resident and British citizen Chrissie Wellington beat last year’s champion, Mirinda Carfrae, to the finish by nearly three minutes.  Wellington posted a time of 8:55:08, while Carfrae finished second in 8:57:57.

Tim DeBoom Talks About Winning the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon

Tim DeBoom, two time Ironman world champion, won this year’s Noresman Xtreme Triathlon in 11 hours 18 minutes 47 seconds. Norseman is the world’s toughest long-distance distance triathlon. It starts in a fjord and finishes atop Gaustatoppen mountain at 1,850 meters above sea level. Total ascent is 5,000 meters. The water temperature is normally about 15.5 degrees C, and the air temperature normally ranges from 6 to 28 degrees C through the race day. Upon returning to Boulder, DeBoom sat down with Colorado Triathlete's Kristen McFarland to talk about the experience.

Angela Naeth, Joe Gambles Win Ironman 70.3 Boulder

After six second place finishes at Ironman 70.3 events this year, Angela Naeth claimed victory in the Rohto Ironman 70.3 Boulder.  Naeth, a perennially strong cyclist, took a commanding lead with her 2:14:23 bike split and held on with a 1:25:11 run to edge out Kelly Williamson.  Naeth finished in 4:10:31 to Williamson’s 4:12:42.  Boulder pro Amanda Lovato rounded out the podium in 4:23:55.  In the men’s race, Australian Joe Gambles left his mark on the race course with a commanding win in 3:45:35.  Raynard Tissink took second in 3:51:41.  Paul Ambrose finished third in 3:53:01.

Individual national titles were earned in six categories, and athletes finishing in less than four hours qualified to compete in the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships this September in Beijing, China.

Brad Zoller, Kelley Cullen Win XTERRA Indian Peaks

Brad Zoller of Avon improved his placing just one spot over last year’s XTERRA Indian Peaks, but that’s all he needed.  After finishing in the runner-spot last year, Zoller took control early in this year’s race and didn’t relent until he crossed the finish line in 1:47:21.  John Klish of Eagle placed second in 1:53:12, and Llewellyn Holmes placed third in 1:53:45.  In the women’s race, Kelley Cullen of New Castle broke the two-hour mark with her winning time of 1:57:12.  Last year’s champion, Boulder’s Sara Tarkington, took second in 2:01:42.  Luisa Bryce of Denver rounded out the podium with her time of 2:08:07.

Tim DeBoom Wins Norseman Xtreme Triathlon

Two time world Ironman champion, Tim DeBoom, from won this year’s Noresman Xtreme Triathlon in 11 hours 18 minutes 47 seconds. A surprising second place went to Markus Stierli from Switzerland, with an impressive final brutal sprint from Rjukan up to Gaustatoppen. He was closely followed by the 2009 winner Tom Remman from Norway, who put up a brave fight with Tim DeBoom, but had to let him go in the final stages up the mountain.

Timothy O’Donnell outlasted rival Paul Matthews to sew up his third straight victory at the Boulder Peak Triathlon. Matthews finished second (1:52:31) to O’Donnell’s time of 1:51:52). Greg Bennet rounded out the top three with his time of 1:53:53. In the women’s race, Annabel Luxford claimed victory in 2:08:28. Nikki Butterfield finished second in 2:09:47, and Annie Warner placed third in 2:10:36.

Vanhoenacker Posts Fastest Ironman Performance Ever

In 1997, Belgian triathlete Luc Van Lierde established a mark that has gone untouched for fourteen years. At Ironman Europe in 1997, Van Lierde became the first man to break the 8 hour barrier for the Ironman distance by clocking a winning time of 7 hours 50 minutes 27 seconds. His splits included a 44 minute swim, a 4 hour 28 minute bike, and a 2 hour 36 minute marathon. That record has dangled out there like a carrot as winning times at Ironman races have continued to fall over the years. Yet until Ironman Austria this year, nobody else has been able to break Van Lierde’s benchmark time.

Potts Extends His Lead in the Life Time Fitness Race to the Toyota Cup Series

Colorado pro triathletes swept the top four spots in Sunday’s Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, and Olympic distance contest.  Andy Potts of Colorado Springs took the top spot in 1 hour 46 minutes 5 seconds.  Boulder’s Matt Reed took second in 1:45:47.  Greg Bennet followed in third (1:46:48), with Cameron Dye in fourth (1:48:23).  In the women’s race, Colorado’s Amanda Stevens placed seventh in 2:04:35.

New Course Records at Ironman Coeur d'Alene

Alexander and Dibens Claim Titles

Craig Alexander (8:19:48) and Julie Dibens (9:16:40) claimed victories in this weekend’s Ironman Coeur d’Alene. Both set new course records en route to the wins. Alexander posted splits of 50 minutes 46 seconds for the swim, 4 hours 38 minutes 44 seconds for the bike, and 2 hours 46 minutes 54 seconds for the marathon run. Diben’s winning numbers included a 52:36 swim, 4:52:18 bike, and 3:27:09 run.

Michael Lovato took the runner-up spot at this year’s Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3, while Josiah Midaugh rounded out the podium in third place. Amanda Lovato finished fifth in the women’s race.

Boulder's 5430 Sprint Triathlon

Jim Hallberg (1:09:29) and Lisa Marangon (1:15:34) claimed wins at the annual 5430 Sprint Triathlon at Boulder Reservoir.  Recent men’s collegiate national champion from CU, Rudy Kahsar, took second in the men’s race in 1:10:37.  Erick Kenney finished third in 1:11:12.  In the women’s race, Boulder pro Uli Bromme took the runner-up position in 1:16:37.  Two-time defending women’s champion, Teri Cady, rounded out the podium in 1:18:14.

Long Course Triathlete Discusses his Progression in the Sport

Tim O'Donnell's progression in triathlon has been nothing less than extraordinary. Since the time he moved to Colorado Springs in 2008 to join the National Team he has been a silver medalist at the Pan Am Games and two U.S. Pro Championships, and won the Boulder Peak Triathlon twice. Moving to longer distances, he has won four half-Ironman races including the 2010 70.3 Pro Championship. At the 2010 ITU Long Course World Championship—roughly three quarters the distance of an Ironman with the full swim—he finished second. Now he is taking on the full Ironman distance and managed a  second place finish in a stacked field at the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas on May 21st. Tim talked to Colorado Triathlete  about his career and his debut Ironman in Texas.
