ISSUE #8, October/November 2000 – St. Joseph, Missouri hosted the Mrs. T’s Pierogies Triathlon National Age Group Championship on September 9th. St, Joseph is on the Missouri River north of Kansas City. The swim was in Lake Contrary, an oxbow lake, and the bike course was through the city and completely closed to traffic for the race.
The top 6 male and female finishers in each five-year age category qualified to go to the 2001 world champi-onships to compete in the amateur division. The world championships will be held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on July 23rd, 2001. Although the ITU World Championships for pros is draft-legal, the amateur race is not.
Athletes qualify to compete at Nationals by placing in the top 3 of their age group or the top 25% overall in any USA Triathlon sanctioned event. There will be over 740 sanctioned races in the U.S. this year. Alternatively, placing in the top 5 in their age group or the top 33% overall at a regional championship race will qualify the triathlete for the Championship.
Eight hundred and ten athletes competed in the race. There will be a second qualifier on June 3rd, 2001, in Lake Placid, New York.
