Durango’s Marisa Asplund Receives Honorable Mention

March 9, 2011 (Colorado Springs, CO) – USA Triathlon announced today that Sean Jefferson and Gwen Jorgensen earned 2010 Elite Duathlete of the Year accolades, and Ben Simmons claimed 2010 Paraduathlete of the Year honors. USA Triathlon’s Duathlon Committee and the Athlete Advisory Council selected the award winners.
Jefferson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) finished eighth and was the top U.S. elite finisher at the 2010 ITU Duathlon World Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland. Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) placed 13th in the same event and was top U.S. women’s elite athlete. Jefferson and Jorgensen also were named the 2010 USA Triathlon Rookies of the Year.
Elite Duathlete of the Year honorable mention accolades went to Marisa Asplund (Durango, Colo.) and David Thompson (St. Paul, Minn.), who were podium finishers at the 2010 Elite Duathlon National Championship and posted top-20 finishes at the ITU Duathlon World Championship.
Simmons (New York, N.Y.) claimed a pair of paraduathlon titles in 2010. He topped the podium in the TRI-2 category at the Duathlon Nationals in Richmond, Va., on April 25 and followed that up with a world title at the 2010 ITU Duathlon World Championship on Sept. 3.
