USA Triathlon

March 27, 2011 (Pelham, AL) – Dave Slavinski and Gail Kattouf posted convincing victories to claim the overall national titles Sunday at the 2011 USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championship, which was held in conjunction with the Powerman Alabama Duathlon at Oak Mountain State Park.

USA Triathlon’s 2010 Duathlete of the Year, Slavinski (Point Pleasant, N.J.) picked up where he left off last year by covering the 10-kilometer run, 60-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run course in 2 hours, 46 minutes, 56 seconds – nearly 6 minutes ahead of the field. Slavinski showed remarkable consistency, posting 10k run splits of 34:43 and 35:04 on either side of a 1:36:02 60k bike.

All three men’s overall podium finishers came from the 40-44 age group, as Stephen Dupree (Boulder, Colo.) took second in 2:52:41 and Kevin O’Connor (Corcoran, Minn.) grabbed third in 2:53:42.

Kattouf (Greenville, S.C.) was the day’s fastest female age group competitor to take the overall and 35-39 age group titles in 3:14:42, which was more than 9 minutes ahead of the next finisher. Kattouf made her move on the bike where her 1:44:25 60k split was the fastest among all women’s age-groupers.

Shannon Hawrylo (Reston, Va.) was second overall and the 25-29 winner in 3:23:53, while Carrie Andrews (Pelham, Ala.) placed third overall and won the 30-34 age group in 3:25:52.

In addition to the overall winners, athletes ranging from ages 19 to 77 were crowned age group national champions Sunday.
