June 24, 2007 (Zurich, Switzerland) – Nearly 120,000 spectators enjoyed the action at this year’s IRONMAN Switzerland. In the men’s race, Ronnie Schildknecht – the winner of the IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland – had a breathtaking come-from-behind victory, passing Mathias Hecht (SUI) during the second lap of the run.
In the women’s contest,Australian athlete Rebecca Preston defended her title in Switzerland, taking the lead during the second lap of the bike and hanging on for the win. Preston passed early leader Sybylle Matterover, who had dueled with Alison Fitch (AUS) and Simone Buerli (SUI).
Laurent Jalabert, the former pro cyclist from France who was ranked first on the UCI World ranking list between 1995 and 2000, made an impressive IRONMAN debut. As expected, he was strong on the bike, but his superb run helped him finish 22nd (9:12.30).
