Jones Claims Win in Men’s Race
June 20, 2010 (Boulder, CO) – Sunday’s 5430 Sprint Triathlon marked the first edition of the race under new ownership. Last year, the World Triathlon Corporation—owners of the IRONMAN series—acquired the Boulder Triathlon Series from race director Barry Siff. Despite the change in ownership, Siff still played a role in putting the race on this year. About 1,600 athletes showed up to enjoy what has become a popular Boulder institution with a few added flairs thanks to its new affiliation with IRONMAN.
Defending champion Teri Cady, 34, of Louisville won the women’s race 1 hour 16 minutes 51 seconds to put her in the lead for the series title after the first of three races. The two remaining races include the Boulder Peak Triathlon on July 11 and the IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder on August 8, both to be held at Boulder Reservoir. Cady not only won the 5430 Sprint Triathlon last year, but also came away with the series title. Cady, who coaches cross country at Fairview High School, plans to compete again in the Boulder Peak Triathlon where she finished second last year in the women’s amateur division.
Wendy Mader, 37, of Fort Collins finished second in the women’s race with a time of 1:18:11. Boulder’s Katie Bell, 33, rounded out the top three. Amanda Durner, 37, of Colorado Springs posted the third fastest swim split of the day—swimming the half mile in 10:02—and went on to finish fourth in the women’s race with a time of 1:19:25. Kathleen Allen, 39, of Evergreen claimed fifth place in 1:19:53.
In the men’s competition, pro triathlete Jordan Jones, 29, from Golden claimed victory in 1:08:06. Although Jones set himself up well with a 10:06 swim split, it took foot speed to seal the win. Jones blazed the 5K run course with the fastest split of the day in 16:52.
“I have been racing really well,” Jones told the Boulder Daily Camera. “I knew I had a good shot today and it’s great to be able to execute and do it.”
Australian pro Joshua Rix—who arrived in Boulder only a few weeks ago for summer training—took the runner-up spot in a time of 1:09:48. Joseph Fogarty, 40, finished third in 1:10:39, and Brian Schaning, 28, took fourth in 1:10:49. Both Fogarty and Schaning reside in Colorado Springs. Longmont’s Jim Halbert, 33, finished close behind Schaning in 1:10:50 to claim fifth place.
The 2010 Boulder Triathlon Series—comprised of the 5430 Sprint Triathlon, the Boulder Peak Triathlon, and Rohto IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder—will award up to $7,500 in gift certificates to series age group winners. Racers are awarded 10 points for first, 8 points for second, 6 points for third, and 4-3-2-1 points for fourth through seventh places. Competitors must finish at least two races in the series to be eligible for awards.
