Dussault Anchors Relay Day After Individual Gold
USA Triathlon
February 14, 2010 (Eidsvoll, Norway) – One day after capturing the United States’ first individual winter triathlon world championship, Rebecca Dussault capped a historic weekend by anchoring Team USA to relay gold at the 2010 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships on Sunday.
The American trio of Dussault (Gunnison, Colorado), Emma Garrard (Park City, Utah) and Heather Best (Fairbanks, Alaska) cruised to the title by more than 4 minutes with a time of 1:23:58, ahead of runner-up and host Norway and third-place Russia.
In the team relay, each team member completes a 2-kilometer run, 3-kilometer mountain bike and 3-kilometer cross-country ski before handing off to their teammate.
Garrard, who finished seventh in Saturday’s elite race despite a flat tire, established a lead that Team USA would not relinquish on the leadoff leg.
After Best extended the lead on the second leg, Dussault, who brought home individual gold by nearly 2 minutes in Saturday’s race, closed out the dominating victory.
The American men’s squad of Jay Henry, Neal Henderson and Brian Smith finished seventh in 1:22:54.
