While most Colorado triathletes are spinning on their rollers with snow falling outside, the racing season is underway in the southern hemisphere where summer is in full swing. On February 4, a field of top triathletes took on the half-ironman distance of the Cristal Pucon Triathlon in Chile.
Colorado’s Tim DeBoom took third in the race, which is Chile’s largest and oldest triathlon. DeBoom’s time of 3:52:46 gave him a two-minute margin over fourth place finisher Cristian Bustos, Chile’s native son and a frequent Boulder resident. Ken Glah of Pennsylvania and Chris Legh of Australia took first and second, respectively, in 3:50:30 and 3:52:46.
In the women’s race, Nicole DeBoom matched her husband’s effort with a second place finish in a time of 4:26:23. Joanne King of Australia took first in 4:21:55. It was two Argentineans, Barbara Buenahora and Silvana Calcagno, who claimed third and fourth, respectively.
The race offered a prize purse of nearly 20,000 US dollars, with both the men’s and women’s winners taking home $4,000 each. The combined effort of the DeBoom household netted a payday of $4,400.
