CU Boulder Triathlon Team Takes Third at the 2019 USAT Collegiate Club Nationals

TEMPE, Arizona — Queens University of Charlotte earned its first-ever overall club title at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships, held April 5-6 Tempe, Arizona. Queens also earned the men’s club title, while the University of California, Berkeley, earned top honors for women.

Queens won the overall title by a 43-point margin over Cal, tallying 4,464 points to the Bears’ 4.421. The University of Colorado took third in the standings with 4,401 points. Overall club scores were tallied by combining results from Friday’s sprint draft-legal race, Saturday morning’s Olympic-distance race and Saturday afternoon’s Mixed Relay.

Awards were also presented to the top men’s and women’s clubs, based on a combination of draft-legal and Olympic-distance results.

In the men’s club competition, Queens took top honors with 2,215 points. The Queens men dominated Saturday’s Olympic-distance race, placing all four scoring athletes in top 16 and six in the top 20. The Royals were led by Jack Felix and Justin Lippert, who took first and third respectively in Saturday’s race, and Milan Tomin, who placed fourth in the draft-legal race on Friday.

Cal took second in the men’s club standings with 2,150 points. Fittingly, Bear Schickel led the Bears, earning a fifth-place finish in the Olympic-distance race. Taking third in the men’s club standings was Colorado with 2,148 points, buoyed by a Mike Meehan second-place finish in the draft-legal race and a Roy Madrid second-place finish in the Olympic-distance.

The women’s club title went to Cal with 2,187 points. The Bears placed four in the top-18 in the Olympic-distance race — led by Annika McBride and Anna Belk in fourth and fifth place, respectively — and had a seventh-place finish by Katie Patrick in the draft-legal. Colorado State University placed second for women, thanks to a historic podium sweep by Hayley Belles, Meghan Smith and Katrina Lems in the Olympic-distance. Belles also took sixth in the draft-legal race.

Colorado rounded out the women’s club podium, taking third with 2,161 points. The Buffs were led by Ali Schwein, who placed second in Friday’s draft-legal race and 14th in Saturday’s Olympic-distance.

Queens successfully defended its Mixed Relay national title on Saturday afternoon, with a squad made up of Tomin, Phelan Purnell, Felix and Anabell Knoll. Each athlete completed a 250-meter swim, 5-kilometer bike and 1.2-kilometer run before tagging off to the next teammate. The Royals recorded a total time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 11 seconds, as Knoll brought the team across the line more than 90 seconds ahead of its closest competitor.

The U.S. Naval Academy squad — made up of Nicholas Duchez, Carolyn Riggs, Adam Estroff and Theresa Neubig —took second place with a time of 1:08:55. Neubig narrowly outsprinted Colorado’s anchor leg, Schwein, in the home stretch. The Buffs’ team of Mike Meehan, Paisley Sheehan, Roy Madrid and Schwein would take third place, just a second behind Navy in 1:08:56.

Individual combined titles were awarded to the top overall performers of the weekend, determined by combining an athlete’s individual scores from Friday’s draft-legal sprint and Saturday’s Olympic-distance race. The women’s combined award went to the U.S. Military Academy’s Emily Landeryou with 743 points. Queens’ Zimovjanova and Colorado’s Schwein both tallied 732 points, but Zimovjanova had the advantage on a tiebreaker because she finished higher than Schwein in the Olympic-distance race.

The men’s combined title went to the University of California San Diego’s Jayden Schofield with 745 points. Chris Pietraszkiewicz was the combined runner-up with 721 points, followed by the U.S. Naval Academy’s Adam Estroff with 717. UCSD’s Luke Schofield also had 717 points but was fourth in the standings because he placed lower than Estroff in the Olympic-distance race.

The U.S. Naval Academy earned the Armed Services Award for the seventh consecutive year, and Iowa State University won the coveted Spirit Award.
