Christian Kemp (AUS) was the first to charge into T1 with Drew Scott (USA), Jonathan Tryoen (FRA) and Will Clarke (GBR) just seconds behind.
Early on the bike Scott, Kemp and Clarke put time on all but one man in the field, Tom Lowe (GBR), who tried to bridge his way towards the lead group. Over the second half of the bike Scott hammered away at the front, first dropping Clarke and then Kemp. Scott built up a five-minute lead on Kemp at the end of the bike, with Thomas Gerlach (USA) in next, eight minutes off the leader’s pace.
Once the race hit the run Kemp started to nibble away at Scott’s lead, which was down to 2:30 at the halfway point of the final leg. In the end Kemp could only get to within a minute and half, which meant Scott took the 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 Silverman title in 4:19:07. Kemp crossed the line 1:25 later for second, while Gerlach finished off the podium in 4:23:09.
